      1. I just found the email from Ruth Eagle: “I would love many. I can’t afford 8 each. Can you do less or sell leaves?”
I am an older woman, 79 years old, Please, can you do less or just sell leaves?

        1. I have an African violet whose crown looks very full or overcrowded. What do you recommend that I do?

          1. Hello Diane,
thank you for your question. If there are lots of rows of leaves (4-5), then the crown leaves may not have space to spread out. You can start by removing any older leaves from the outer row of the plant. Also in between the other rows, if you see a leaf which is too close to the others, you can remove it, this way the the other 2 leaves next to it will have space to grow and spread. Dont remove too many leaves, just a few which you can identify as too cramped and tight in between other leaves. Also, can remove any leaves which look dull, droopy or yellow/brown in color too. Hope this helps. BV

  1. Very nice plants. The first African violets I purchased when I decided to try and replicate my grandmother’s passion for the flowers. Amethyst is now huge and never stops blooming. Little Punter was almost lost but bounced back and is now covered with blooms again. Chanticleer has just flowered for the first time and is simply charming. Thank you for offering so many vintage varieties!

    1. Hello Karen, thank you for your kind words. Happy to hear your violet growing hobby has turned into a success, I am sure you have your grandmothers green fingers 🙂 regards, BV

  2. I am just starting to collect A/V. My mother and grandmothers had the greenest thumbs. My question is this – I have ordered two plants. When they come, how long before I transplant them to slightly larger pots? Ive finally found success by using wicks, grow lights and the right kind of potting medium.

    1. Hello Cherry, thank you for your question. Great to hear you have find a right balance to grow your violets. I would recommend waiting 3-4 months for the ness angel glitter (it’s on the smaller size) & 2-3 months for frosty cherry. Hope this helps, regards, BV

  3. I am happy to report that I followed your instructions on renewing two, over 20 years old violets with very long woody necks. With much trepidation, I made the cuts, scrapes, and repotting. I did not kill them! And now, my deep pink with white edges and medium green, roundish leaves and the dark blue, dark green leaves, both pansy, are thriving and in full bloom. Thank you for your great advice! I also have one pale pink with darekr purple-pink centers in full bloom, so purchasing a couple more colors now to expand my collection.

  4. Hello
I do not understand the difference of a trailer/trailing AV from a non-trailing? Could you
    Please explain
    Thank you Carol

    1. Hello Carol, thank you for your question. A non-trailing violet is often known as a rosette type of african violet. In a rosette african violet, the leaves grown from the center crown area in a circular or radial pattern. The non-trailing plant has a single stem from which the leaves grow. That is 2-3 leaves grow from the center, then as they grow larger, a second row of leaves grows and then a third row. As the violet grows larger, it will have 3-5 rows of leaves, all growing as a set of 3-4 leaves from the center. However, a trailing violet, has multiple center crowns, They can grow a set of 3-4 leaves not only from the center, but from the sides too. These plants have multiple stems growing from the same plant roots and are known as multi-crown plants. Hope this makes sense, regards, BV

  5. I would like to order 3 possibly 4 of your African violets, my problem is we are going away next week and I’m afraid that if I wait we get back to order they will be gone, so was wondering if you could hold till after the first of October?
I just noticed you are in Clarksburg, MD , we lived 28 years in Lisbon, MD, that’s about 10 miles east of Mt. Airy, MD.
Please you will hold them for me. In our move to VA. I lost all but 3 of the 15 violets that I had for years, so now I’m trying to replace them.
    Thank you and god bless.

    1. Hello Jan,

thank you for your message. Yes, I can keep the violets on hold for you. Which ones are you interested in? I can double check to make sure I have them in stock. Yes, I am in Clarksburg, soon moving more north to Monrovia/Ijamsville area. Once again, let me know which varieties and I make sure I have them. regards, BV

      1. Thank you for agreeing to hold them for me. Unfortunately I noticed 2 of the 4 I wonted sold out. Here are the 2 Cajun’s Lil Joy and Omaha Thunder.
When you have these 3 back in stock please let me know right away, I will purchase them right away. They Frosty Cherry, Honeysuckle Rose, and differently Twist and Shout.
How would you like do this you go ahead pull them andi contact you when we get home or would like for to go ahead and place my.order.snd you wait to mail them ? Let me.and again thank you and as always God Bless

          1. I hate to do this but I’m going to have to cancel Cajun’s Lil Joy and Omaha Thunder. I went up to NY to visit my daughter and her family, we ended up with a family emergency. That is I’ve been sense and have no idea when I will return home. I thought it not right that get you to order those violets for me when you can sale to someone else. Hopefully when I do return home I can order them and hope you will have them. Thank you very much for doing that for me. People like you will always get my business.
I wish you luck in your move and I feel for you. My move is still fresh in my memory. After living in a house for 28 years you can imagine.
Thank you again and god bless

  6. I just received an email that starter AVs are now available on your website. I’m looking for a bloom that is more blue than purple, however, I see a lot of those are already sold out. Will you receive more? Also, the nursery where I obtained 2″ AVs that I thought were miniature AVs where actually starter/baby plants and in bloom. Unfortunately, I’ve lost quite a few of them and I don’t know why. I provide the same care as my 4″ potted ones. Hence, I’m cautious about buying anymore of that size because of my track record. Any advice?

    1. Hello Victoria,

If there are any sold out that you are still interested in, let me know and I can check my stock. I did update the listings also a few days ago. If you do buy smaller size ones, you should keep them in a ziploc baggie for 2-4 weeks, let them acclimatize to your new lighting and temperature. Then once you start seeing new growth, can open up the baggie for a week longer, then take them out of the baggie and put them on your stand. Usually you should water smaller plants less often as the roots are not developed and strong enough. Hope this helps, BV

      1. I just checked the Shop page and the ones I’m interested are the blue flowering standard size plants (not trailers) that I noted here even though they appear to be sold out.
Pixie Blue, Cajun’s Beautiful, Midnight Rascal, Little Ebony, Blue Girl, Amethyst.
Also, good advice as to caring for the 2″ plants. Wasn’t told that at the nursery

        1. Hello Victoria,

I just updated my stock. Welcome to check for violets on the sale page. regards,
          BV

  7. I read your page about how you grow your starter plants from a leaf. The other day I went to the nursery that sells 2″ potted AVs and noticed that on some of them the stems were very thick which seemed odd to me if it was a baby plant. I asked the associate and was told it may have been a cutting off of a mother plant? What does that mean?

    1. Hello Victoria,

sometimes a small plant/sucker will start growing from the side of the mother plant, if it goes unnoticed, it can start growing as an individual plant, these can be removed from the mother plant and potted up. Sometimes, a new baby plant will grow off the shoot of a leaf if its rooted in the same soil as mother plant. It could also be a leaf cutting plant, grown the same way as starting a plant from leaf. Hope this helps, regards BV

  8. Please, let me know ow. When you have, senk’s snowy egret pink mint, lunar lily white ,dress on doll, and Biscayne trailer.

      BV
